You Are The Best Present // Luke 2:8-20

What is the best present you received for Christmas? Think of when you were 8 years old or 11 or 23; where is that present that you thought was the best? Christmas is a great day of anticipation for anyone who celebrates the holiday whether you are a Christian or not. Why? Because of the presents. What will I receive? What will be under the tree, in the driveway or in the stocking? The tradition of giving gifts and sharing meals over holidays finds its roots in the Old Testament as well as extra biblical traditions around the world.

The Apostle John wrote that God sent His one and only Son into the world that who so ever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Later the Apostle Paul would write to the early church that the gift of God is eternal life and this life is in His Son (Romans 6:23). The angels announced the birth of the Christ Child Jesus - the greatest gift all mankind can receive. Jesus' birth announces God's love to the world and leaves us with the question, do I believe that God loves me this much?

I would like to turn things on their head for you this Christmas season and moving forward. Instead of getting a present, be the present and give yourself to someone or something. Instead or getting - give. Give yourself in service to your spouse, family and friends. Cook a meal (and clean up) for your family. Plan an evening out for your spouse. Buy tickets and take a friend to the movies and dinner afterwards to talk about the movie and life. Give yourself to something - a local missional agencies that is fighting homelessness (www.sophiaway.org), human trafficking (www.iwantrest.com), or be a child sponsor (www.compassion.com).

You are the present - give yourself away; in doing so, you follow Jesus' footsteps. You will get far more satisfaction, excitement and joy by giving rather than receiving..
